Why do people read in the bathroom?
I always want to be out asap, or I'm too wet.

I like to lie down when reading.

been on a bit of a Sci-Fi Tip

recently read

Image
Robert Silverberg - Recalled to Life

Image
Brain Aldiss - the dark light years

Image
William Gibson - Idoru

Hadn't read any Gibson since early 90's - but found Idoru actually quite entertaining, good for a holiday read.

Oh yeah! I'm a bit too tall to be comfortable in the bath, anyway my arms and hands get damp too quickly (too hairy?)

lol @ paradox. the answer, i think, is to have books in there that you wouldn't mind if you dropped. i've been reading lots of old brown paperbacks recently. sci-fi, especially. which doesn't matter if it gets a bit sweaty around the edges. i'm likely to be the last person to read it anyway. an especial highlight was this...

a novel perspective. and a joy to read.

i like to take coffee, cognac, and a spliff in there too.
and broadcast some relaxing sounds in the background.
it is possible to attain heaven on earth.

currently struggling with this....

because it does not have the same pace as HHGTTG.
and i get the feeling he is laughing at his own jokes, which is a bit of a turnoff.
will persevere though.

then, it will be..

happy bathtime everybody.

I have a copy of The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul read by the author on tape (and yes it makes it even easier to pick up on the auto-jocular amusement of the author). I used to listen to it while falling asleep back when I was 13 or so. It was a favorite of mine then, and I'm sure I've got large chunks of it memorized, but it's soporific powers were not to be denied, and there are many gaps in my memory of the story.

Does Dirk Gently get any more likable? He is up there with Diceman and Lux
the Poet for 'literary characters i would like to slap'. Dude doesn't seem
to have one redeeming characteristic at the moment. Still, i'll persevere.

nod. great book. crappy cover. enjoyed the fact it was set in England, and had to ration myself to 4-5 'sittings' rather than steaming through it all in one go. Will definitely be checking out more from Mr Aldiss. Got any recommendations?

No Dirk is a total boob, and not of the lovely variety. He does run a holistic detective service after all, and as Natsume Soseki would say, "the only thing worse than a detective is a farting detective." Wodin was a far more sympathetic character.
