Sleep Deprivation – Streaming Channels

We recently launched our own series of live streams under the “Sleep Deprivation” name, intended to give us a little more freedom to try out long-form ambient and experimental pieces. We’ve got recordings and live-streams featuring music from our archives, along with new original works and generative experiments, where the machines take over.

“Welcome to Sleep Deprivation, a sonic refuge for the sleep-deprived and the restless. Our channel delivers deep, hypnotic dystopian drone music, a fusion of dark ambient soundscapes, industrial undertones, and eerie atmospheric drones designed to lull you into a trance-like state.

Whether you’re battling insomnia, overactive thoughts, or the creeping silence of late-night solitude, our immersive soundscapes will envelop you in a world of slow-burning tension and melancholic serenity. Let the distant hum of decaying cities, ghostly transmissions, and mechanical lullabies guide you into the unknown.

Perfect for: Midnight thinkers, cyberpunk dreamers, and those seeking a surreal escape.
Sounds of the future’s ruins: Haunting drones, deep reverbs, and synthetic echoes.
Sleep… or surrender to the void.

Subscribe now and drift into the dystopian dreamstate.”

About the Video
A combined study in Concrete, Brutalism, Photography, Typography and Sheffield’s rich Electronic Music History.

Inspired by photos of Sheffield and the psychogeographical nature of the surrounding environment and moments in time captured by Martin Dust, inspired by their music and photography amoeba combined creative bespoke parametric typography, ai and machine learning with real-time motion graphics to create a unique glimpse into one familiar yet strange Brutal reality we all see a version of everyday

Reflecting the brutalist history of Sheffield, set to the music of The BlackDog. The film was initially made for the My Brutal Life Installation at Moore Street Power station, now utilised here with the captured impulse response reverb of the power station’s interior and evolving in live AV sets with the electronic act.

Further Details
“When we discovered that we could use the top floor of the Moore Street Substation for the exhibition of My Brutal Life, we couldn’t believe our luck. For us, this brutalist icon is a perfect fit for My Brutal Life, so we decided immediately to lean into the unique nature of the building.

It’s one of our favourite brutalist buildings in Sheffield and provides a massive space for the event. It’s rarely open to the public and often shrouded in mystery. Many people, even locals, don’t know what the building is.

The space did, however, have problems. The soundcheck for the audio revealed a particular issue – the immense space has a massive natural reverberation of over 9.7 seconds. The original album and soundtrack for My Brutal Life wouldn’t work in this environment, with the bass and drums creating an overwhelming sense of claustrophobia. We returned to the studio to remix the existing tracks and create new pieces to fit this space. We wanted people to feel comfortable and spend time with the art.

As a result, we had a very different soundtrack to the original, so we’ve decided to release the full audio as it was heard in the Moore Street Substation.”

Brutal Five To One Mix V2 – Out Now

Brutal Five To One Mix V2 by The Black Dog (Release Artwork)

As one of our favourites, our recent “Brutal Five To One Mix” has been revisited, updated and remastered for a full release as a compilation.

“This mix was created at Park Hill while photographing the flats for a future project. It draws upon all of the music we’ve been making about Sheffield and Brutalism, along with a few choice selections from our catalogue, all to create a vibration that can never be seen.

The needs and polarization of our society feed heavily into the collective consciousness, often among people who’ve never lived in social housing or on a large estate. Life is complex enough but when it involves negotiations with businesses, committees, funding bodies, and of course, individuals with very subjective opinions, the original vision will always be compromised. This clash of differing ideas and demands can create something new that would have never existed. Unfortunately, that rarely pleases anyone.

This mix and the selected tracks within it were created with these feelings in mind, bringing together conflicting thoughts and ideas to envision a new internal landscape.”

Live In Barcelona 25/03/2022 – Out Now

Live In Barcelona 25/03/2022 by The Black Dog (Release Cover Artwork)

Recorded live in Barcelona, this album provides a journey through our work from the last 18 months, taking cues from the Dubs, Music For Photographers and Brutalism projects. The music and the visuals of the live performance document the brutalist architecture, found at home and in the locations we visit, while also reflecting its place within the landscape and our lives.

Using original photography, this live AV show developed the visuals using artificial intelligence and neural networks to create new constructions, worlds and visions for a version of a future just over the page.

The Black Dog and Amoeba Design are working together to realise a series of art projects for live events and gallery installations, all under the banner of My Brutal Life, an ongoing series of projects encompassing music, photography, books, exhibitions, 360 audio-visual events and live performances.

This live performance marks the end of the first year in developing this body of work.

Brutal Minimalism EP – Coming Soon

Brutal Minimalism EP by The Black Dog

Four fresh concrete cuts from a promised future that we all deserve.

The Brutal Minimalism EP follows us on a journey across several sites in Yorkshire famous for their brutal architecture. The four rhythmic beat-driven tracks were all written on location while waiting for ideal lighting and the rain to stop. And let’s face it, it rains a lot in Yorkshire.

The tracks evolved over a number of weeks, produced within the architecture of the car parks, streets and nearby green spaces, all to find the distinct vibrations of the place. Sound samples were captured from the environment and banks of percussion, pads and tones were created for use throughout the pieces. Working within this architecture influenced the process and ultimately shaped the evolution of the tracks.

Here we present four slices from those sessions where we ask you to embrace the grey over the green.
